July 22, 2009 Eclipse

Partial eclipses of the sun pale in comparison to the overwhelming spectacle of a total solar eclipse. On Wednesday, July 22, 2009, a total eclipse of the sun will be visible from within a narrow corridor, which traverses a third of the Earth.

The eclipse will start on the west coast of India and travel north-east across the sub-continent passing over Varanasi and Darjeeling lasting for 4 minutes, then onward through Bhutan and Bangladesh till it reaches China. We offer the opportunity to witness the celestial display in holy Varanasi and the tea-tree terraced Darjeeling. The Varanasi Eclipse viewing may well be better than Darjeeling. The bonus experience is that you get to savour India in miniature while being part of a rare astronomical moment.

The cities of Bhavnagar, Surat, Indore, Murwara, Varanasi, Aurangabad and Patna all lie in the path of totality. Of these, Surat, the second largest city in Gujarat, is right on the centre line.

There are numerous possibilities for building a trip in India which incorporate the 2009 Eclipse. Of the cities mentioned previously, Patna should give the longest period of totality, although Sasaram is about half-way to Varanasi (which will also experience totality) and is slap bang on the centre line.

Total Eclipse of my our heart! haha

A solar eclipse occurs when the moon passes between the Sun and the Earth so that the Sun is fully or partially covered. This can only happen during a new moon, when the Sun and Moon are in conjunction as seen from the Earth. At least two and up to five solar eclipses can occur each year on Earth, with between zero and two of them being total eclipses.[1] Total solar eclipses are nevertheless rare at any location because during each eclipse totality exists only along a narrow corridor in the relatively tiny area of the Moon's umbra.

A total solar eclipse is a spectacular natural phenomenon and many people travel to remote locations to observe one. The 1999 total eclipse in Europe helped to increase public awareness of the phenomenon, as illustrated by the number of journeys made specifically to witness the 2005 annular eclipse and the 2006 total eclipse. The recent solar eclipse of January 26, 2009 was an annular eclipse (see below), while the solar eclipse of July 22, 2009 was a total solar eclipse.

In ancient times, and in some cultures today, solar eclipses have been attributed to supernatural causes. Total solar eclipses can be frightening for people who are unaware of their astronomical explanation, as the Sun seems to disappear in the middle of the day and the sky darkens in a matter of minutes.

Stunning Photos???

Thousands of scrapped taxis are abandoned at a yard in the center of Chongqing city on March 4, 2009. Traffic congestion and pollution have worsened dramatically in Chinese cities as the country's long-running economic expansion has allowed increasing numbers of consumers to make big-ticket purchases such as cars. Small World, Smaller Creatures

Chick embryo (6x): This shot of a nine-day-old chick embryo won first place in the popular vote on Nikon Small World’s website. The New York Times’s John Tierney thinks that’s just because it’s so dang cute, but I beg to differ: as ridiculously cool as it is, it looks something like a fruit snack-cum-monster. De Azevedo obtained this image by staining the embryo with green dye, immersing it in wintergreen oil, and photographing it with a stereomicroscope.
